The Competitive D&D Tournament
The cave opens once. It does not wait. It does not care who you are.
It only asks: can your team survive what's inside?
From 1977 to 2013, teams competed at Gen Con every year in the D&D Open Championship — the same dungeon, multiple tables, one winning team. It was discontinued to push a cooperative program. The competitive player base never got their home back.
That was 13 years ago. The 5e generation has never experienced a real D&D tournament. They don't know what they're missing — but they will recognize it the moment they see it.
"Back in the day the DM would begin the adventure by dropping players in front of the dungeon... because a lot of adventures began as convention tournament modules. Competitive D&D — which I have done — is a lot of fun."
— Matthew Colville, Running the GameThe Cave of Dungeons is Sarasota's answer. A structured, scored, competitive D&D event — where every team runs the same dungeon, every DM runs the same briefing, and at the end of the night, one team stands above the rest.
The Cave shifts each event — same structure, different dungeon. Every team faces the same challenges. No two runs are the same.
The Cave itself speaks. Rules are delivered in character by the Keeper. Every adventurer learns what they're walking into — and what's at stake.
The gold standard of dungeon design. Every room is a decision. Speed, tactics, and survival all feed your team's score. The dungeon is designed to be cleared in one session.
Every team draws their characters at the door. No min-maxing. No optimized builds. Just the hand you're dealt and the choices you make with it.
Points for depth, objectives, puzzles, and party survival. One DM per table, fully briefed. No ambiguity. At the end of the night, the scores are revealed.
